Formed as Aerovias de Mexico (trading as AeroMéxico) by Bancomer (bank) and ASPA (pilot union, 20% share), taking-over some assets of defunct Aeronaves de México. Reorganized in 1995 and became a subsidiary of bank consortium Cintra in 1996 (15% government-owned). Joined SkyTeam alliance partnership in 2000. Should re-enter privatization process during 2003, plans postponed. Expected to be merged with Mexicana in 2005 as a first step for privatization, plan cancelled and to be sold as a separate package along with AeroLitoral. Parent company Cintra renamed to Consorcio Aeroméxico in 1/06 after resale of Mexicana to Grupo Posadas. Reported in 8/07 to be tentatively acquired by Alberto Saba Raffoul and Moises Saba Masri for $100m, with counter bids received 9/07 from Citigroup/Modelo and Canales Clarion family. Citigroup's bid declared winner in 10/07, concluded through its Banamex unit. IPO in 4/11. 3.5% purchased 11/8/11 by Delta, concluded 4/6/12 for 4.17% (later planned to be re-sold to Barclays Bank but abandonned). Half of Banamex/Citigroup shares (18.53% of AeroMéxico) sold in 2/13 to Grupo Lala (milk company). Remaining 16% share owned by Citigroup resold in 5/15 to third parties. 32% additional shares (total 36.17%) acquired by Delta (announced 2/17, completed 3/17 for US$620m), with option to grow to 49%. Filed for Chapter 11 protection in USA on 30/6/20. Majority interest purchased by Apollo Global Management, USA, effective 2/21. Exited Chapter 11 on 17/3/22.

Entered bankrupcy and liquidated in 1988, ceasing all operations. Major domestic flight autohrities taken-over by the Mexican government setting up Transportes Aéreos Federales in 4/88 with government-owned DC-9, until 5/88. Most assets and tradename later transferred to Aerovias de México, dba AeroMéxico.

Formed by Antonio Diaz Lombardo with Pan American assistance. Started services on 14/9/34. Nationalized in 1959. Took-over LAMSA in 1952, Aerovias Reforma in 1954, Aerolineas Mexicanas in 1960, Guest Aerovias in 1961.
