Formed 7/12/50 by the nationalization and merger of FAMA, Aeroposta, ALFA & ZONDA. 30% then 83.5% of stocks acquired in1991 by Iberia (later reduced to 20% when transferred to SEPI, the Spanish state holding company for public enterprises, as a EU condition for Iberia subsidy). Reorganized as a subsidiary of Interinvest. 10% stake of Interinvest acquired 23/10/98 by American Airlines (8.5% stake) while Iberia reduced its stake to 10% in Interinvest (avoiding Continental Airlines along Newbridge Latin America participation with a 45% interest). 85% share to be acquired by workers in 2000, cancelled (0.59% owned by employees by 2007). Filed for protection from creditors in 2001. Intended to be acquired by Peru's Aero Continente in 2001, plans failed. 92.1% acquired by Air Plus Comet (Grupo Marsans) on 17/10/01, increased to 94.4% through Interinvest (100% owned by Marsans) by 2007. Expected to set-up a subsidiary in Chile in 10/03 with 1 747 and 2 737s, and a VIP subsidiary Aerolineas Executive Jet with 3 737-200s in 6/2003. 40% expected to be sold to public investors in 2004, indefinitely postponed.
