Formed in 1930 as American Airways. Merger attempt with Western AL failed in 1970. Took-over Trans Caribbean AW in 1971, AirCal in 1987. Moved HQ from New York to Dallas in 1979. Reorganized as a subsidiary of AMR Corp in 1982. Acquired Eastern's South American network in 1990, TWA's London operations in 1991. Created OneWorld partnership with BA in 1999. Used code AX on selected routes in 2002-2003 to work around pilot contracts limits on commuter flights by Chautauqua and Trans States. 12.944% acquired 4/06 by Fidelity Investments, 5.98% acquired by 12/06 by FL Group, Iceland (increased to 8.63% in 2/07, 9.1% in 9/07, cut to 1.1% in 11/07). Entered Chapter 11 on 29/11/11. Preliminary discussions started in 8/12 for a merger with US Airways, firm offer received in 12/12, approved 13/2/13 by board with parent company to be named American Airlines Group; however merger was blocked on 13/8/13 by the US Dept of Justice until 12/11/13 when finally approved. Exited Chapter 11 on 9/12/13. Single certificate (taking over US Airways) granted on 8/4/15. Received an unsolicited bid for 10% from Qatar Airways on 22/6/17; abandonned on 2/8/17.
