Formed 28/6/1927 by Horacio Echeberrieta and Deutsche Lufthansa, to take-over LAPE (which started services on 14/12/1927). Started services on 14/12/27. Merged into CLASSA (Compañía de Líneas Aéreas Subvencionadas SA) and ceased operationson 29/5/1929; however domestic air services within the nationalist-held regions of Spain were continued under the Iberia name. Nationalized on 30/9/1944, becoming a division of INI (Instituto Nacional de Industria). Created Atlas Group partnership in 1969 with Lufthansa, Air France, Alitalia, Sabena. Was to be renamed Royal Iberian Airlines/Reales Lineas Aéreas de España in 1978, cancelled. 9% stake acquired by British AW in 1999, 1% acquired by AMR (American Airlines) in 1999. Plan to join OneWorld in 1999 was cancelled. Privatized on 3/4/2001 and launched IPO in 2001 (Spanish government kept 5.32%, British Airways 9%, American Airlines 1%, Banco BBVA 7.3%, Grupo Logista 6.7%, El Corte Inglés fashion stores 3%, Caja Madrid 10%, Ahorro Corporacion 3%). Joined Qualiflyer alliance in 2002. Formed low-cost subsidiary Iberia Express based at Barcelona using A319 in late 2004, later changed name to Catair, then to ClickAir (qv) with a 20% share. AMRshare purchased by British AW (then totalling 10%) on 15/11/06. Approached 3/07 by TPG Capitalfor a take-over bid valued $4.5b partnered with Vista Capital (Banco de Santander and Royal Bank of Scotland), Inversiones Ibersuizas and QuercusEquity; bid backed by British AW in 5/07 but abandonned 26/11/07. Counter-bid received 11/07 from Gala Capital, Spain for $5.4b (partnered with BKK bank, Air Europa's chairman, billionaire Alicia Koplowitz). CajaMadrid share increased from10.3% to 23.7% in 11/07 by purchase of stocks from Banco BBVA (7%) and Grupo Logista (6.4%). British AW's holding increased to 13.15% on 19/3/08; re-started merger talks in 7/08, approved by boards on 12/11/09, under new holding "International Consolidated Airlines Group", firmed up 8/4/10, approved 14/7/10 by EU regulators, 29/11/10 by shareholders.
