Nationalized in 1941. 13.41% stake taken by Braniff. Privatization in 1992 & attempted take-over by Iberia failed. 50% stake taken in 1995 by VASP, (planned to be increased to 95% by 1998 not followed up). Reorganized late 2001 when VASP entered bankrupcy and VASP shares sold to private Bolivian interests (Ernesto Asbun) who fled abroad in 7/06 after being accused of mismanagement. 50% then transferred to LAB employee unions; planned to be sold to UK-based Trans-Atlantic Aviation against commitments for new investments, tranfer cancelled in 9/06. Employee-led buy-out cancelled in 12/06. Expected to be re-branded during 2007 but CEO and other executives arrested 29/3/07, scheduled services halted on 1/4/07 by government, last charter service on 5/4/07; AOC to be revoked 29/6/07 if no operations are resumed at that date. Expected to restart 6/07 with an ex-AeroSur 727-200 and cash injection from Swiss TransAtlantic Corp (USA) supplying 2 737-300, 2 767-200, 1 757-200F against 50.7% of shares held by employees (contracted 28/7/07). Plans never proceeded and airline officially liquidated effective 25/10/07 and AOC revoked 20/11/07. Resumed limited non-scheduled services on 23/12/07. Suspended operations again following accident on 1/2/08. AOC re-granted on 18/4/08, allowing LAB to resume full services, but none was ever operated despite numerous optimist announcements. Restarted commercial services on 31/1/09, but suspended indefinitely on 19/3/09. Announced 20/5/09 a partnership with AeroSur for operations of a single 727-200; AOC extended on 19/6/09, revoked 20/5/10 and airline liquidated. Purchase plan announced in 10/12 by Fundación ABU Development Foundation without any evidence of financial backing.
