Formed as Luftag, renamed in 1954. Proposed alliance in 1959-1962 with Air France, Sabena, TAI, UAT, KLM under the Air Union name was abandoned. Created Atlas Group partnership in 1969 with Air France, Iberia, Alitalia, Sabena. Partially-privatized in 1992, remaining 35.7% stake owned by government sold in 1997. Formed Lufthansa Express division in 1992 for low-cost domestic operations (with same AOC), starting services in 10/92; reintegrated into mainline Lufthansa in 1994 (although some aircraft kept their Express titles for some additional months). Entered Star Alliance partnership in 1997. Planned to set-up a low-cost Italian subsidiary code-named Italianwings during fall 2006, re-launched in late 2008 as Lufthansa Italia (qv). Set up a long-haul leisure subsidiary initially code-named Ocean then Eurowings Discover (qv) from 1/21. 20% stake purchased in 5/20 by WSF (German federal investment fund), reduced to 15% in 8/21, to zero in 9/22.
