Mexicana Compañia Mexicana de Aviación MX MXA Mexico México City 1921-2010 Formed as Compañia Mexicana de Transportes Aéreos. Renamed 1924 when acquired by newly-formed Compañia Mexicana de Aviacion. Acquired in 1929 by Pan American (100%), stake eventually reduced to zero by 1961. 58% stake taken by Mexican government in 1982. Privatized in 1989. AeroMexico took 11% stake (increased to 55% in 1993). Stake transferred and became asubsidiary of banks consortium Cintra in 1996 (15% government-owned). Joined Star Alliance partnership in 2000, left in 2004 when code-share with United ceased and replaced by American Airlines. Should be privatized in 2003, plans postponed. Expected to be merged with AeroMéxico in 2005 as a first step for privatization, plan cancelled and to be sold as a separate package along with AeroCaribe and a proposed LCC. Grupo Posadas (hotel chain) selected in 11/2005 as succesful buyer. Joined OneWorld alliance (announced 9/4/08, effective 10/11/09). Entered bankrupcy protection on 2/8/10, continuing operations. 95% of shares tentatively purchased 21/8/10 by Tenedora K (holding owned by Grupo Industrial Omega and Grupo Arizan) from Grupo Posadas, with remaining 5% going to pilots union. Ceased all operations on 28/8/10. Purchased by PC Capital (with additional 25% reportedly to be purchased by German Efromovich from Grupo Synergy) and intended to restart on 24/1/11 (with 7 A320 until 2/11, increased to 39 A320 by 7/11); plan collapsed on 2/3/11. New investor Med Atlantica, Spain unveiled in 2/12 for restart in 9/6/12 with 7 aircraft. Entered liquidation (except the MRO unit) on 4/4/14.
