Formed 9/36 by brothers Jorge and Alberto Márquez Vaesa, starting operations on 20/11/1936. Nationalized in 1951 & placed under control of Uruguayan AF after the 1973 military coup. Became an independent government asset in 1984. 49% staketaken by a VARIG-lead group in 1994 (2% to private investors and 1% to employees). VARIG stake expected to be sold to new investors by late 2004 (either Aerolineas Argentinas or Ashmore Global Fund Ltd investment fund). VARIG's management control released on 27/6/05 (49% to 28% shares) following the bankrupcy of the Brazilian carrier 2 weeks earlier, with the Uruguayan government taking over. 49% share expected to be purchased by Conviasa in 7/2005, plan cancelled by mid-2006. Total of 90% acquired by Uruguayan government in 9/06 with VARIG stake reduced to 4%. 75% purchased 1/7/07 by German Leadgate Investment Corp (led by Matías Campiani; later known as Latin American Regional Aviation Holding Co) for $177m from Uruguayan government. 33% of Latin American Regional Aviation Holding purchased in 4/10 by Jazz Air, Canada. Leadgate shares taken over in 6/12 by the Uruguayan government. Ceased all operations on 6/7/12 due to ongoing losses.
