Purchased 12/9/08 by Straumur-Burdaras Investment Bank hf (Iceland) following failure of UK's XL Airways/XL Leisure Group; ownership control transferred to Icelandic government in 5/09 following the nationalization of Straumur-Burdaras. Purchased on 7/11/12 by BeachSide Capital (investment fund, owner of XL Airways Germany) through X-Air Aviation. Purchased all stocks and became fully owned in 9/14. Entered bankrupcy protection on 19/9/19 and suspended operations on 30/9/19. Entered liquidation process on 4/10/19.

Major shareholder Look Voyages acquired (99%) in 1997 by Canada's Transat AT (also owner of Air Transat). 27.3% sold in 3/2005 to Raymond Lakah (Angel Gate investment group, owner of Air Horizons), increased to 44.27% in 6/2005, 92% in 9/2005. Was expected to create subsidiary UTA Afrique to take-over operations from failing African carriers starting with Air Gabon. Purchased by Avion Group (Air Atlanta Icelandic parent company) on 8/2/06. Crated sister German airline Star Europe in 5/06, both divisions of XL Leisure Group within Avion Group (along Excel Airways). Management buy-out under Excel Group leadership in 10/06. Renamed 22/11/06 to Excel Airways France.
