Name Alias IATA ICAO Country Base Dates Air France AF AFR France Paris-Le Bourget; Orly/Charles de Gaulle 1933- Formed 19/5/33 as SCELA (Société Centrale pour l'Exploitation de Lignes Aériennes) by ministry's order to merge Air Orient, Air Union, CIDNA & S.G.T.A. (Lignes Farman) and take-over of Compagnie Aéropostale (then in bankrupcy), Air Afrique, Régie Malgache & Lignes Aériennes Nord-Africaines. Merger contracted on 19/8/33 and renamed 7/10/1933 to Air France. Halted operations from 1940 during German occupation (except some intra-African services). Re-launched 9/2/45 as Réseau des Lignes Aériennes Françaises by taking-over the remaining AF assets and military-managed air transport organizations; nationalized 26/6/45 and renamed 1/1/46, becoming Société Nationale Air France. Took-over Air Bleu in 1948, becoming Compagnie Nationale Air France. Gradually moved operations from Le Bourget to Orly in 1946-1952. Proposed alliance in 1959-1962 with Lufthansa, Sabena, TAI, UAT, KLM under the Air Union name was abandoned. Created Atlas Group partnership in 1969 with Lufthansa, Iberia, Alitalia, Sabena. Purchased by UTA in 1990 with the new entity named "Nouvelle Compagnie Air France" dba Air France. Took over Air Inter Europe in 1997. Partially privatized in 1998 (45.6% to financial institutions and private owners, 54.4% kept by French state). Formed SkyTeam alliance partnershipwith Delta, launched 22/6/00. Up to 3% stake to be acquired in 2002 by Alitalia, plan later disalllowed by EU authorities, reduced to 2% acquired early 2003. In 2003 formed holding Air France-KLM with KLM with 81% stake from Air France (French government 34.4% being reduced to 25.6% by early 2005, to 17.9% by early 2008, to 15.88% by 2012; increased to 17.5% in 2015) and 19% from KLM private investors; merger completed on 27/9/04.
