Nationalized 1/8/1953 as a public corporation. Intended to be privatized in 1999 and merged with Indian AL, plans failed. 26% share bid conjointly by Air France and Delta in 2000, 40% bid by Singapore AL in 2001. Reactivated Air-India Charters subsidiary and launched low-cost operations with Air-India Express subsidiary. Expected to announce during 12/06 its membership to Star Alliance, later postponed. Planned again to merge with Indian Airlines in 2006 (temporarily named 'Air Indian'), planned to be effective 31/3/07 but postponed and completed 24/8/07.

Formed by Tata Sons Ltd with help from BOAC & Qantas. Designated flag carrier in 1948 with the Indian government takinga 49% stake with option for a majority interest. Nationalized in 1953, adding the "International" suffix. Re-branded back to Air-India on 8/6/62.

Formed by Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata as Tata Sons (Tata Air Mail). Started operations on 15/10/1932. Renamed in 1938. Became a public company in 8/1946 and renamed Air-India.
