Formed in 1926 as Varney Speed Lines. Renamed 1937. Acquired 1982 by Texas Air Corp, taking-over Texas Int'l 1982, People Express in 1986, Frontier AL (People Express' property) in 1986, New York Air in 1987. Entered Chapter 11 on 24/9/83. Texas Air Corp integrated into Contiental Airlines on 8/8/89. 9.9% stake taken in 1988 by SAS. Chapter 11 from 3/12/90, until 1993 when partially acquired by Texas Pacific Group (headed by David Bonderman, stake resold in 2003 following concerns over TPG ownership in America West AL). 28.7% stake taken in 1992 by Air Canada. Continental Lite low-cost division launched in 1993, abandonned in 4/95. 14% stake acquired by Northwest in 1998 (giving 51% voting power), sold back in 2000 under anti-trust pressures. 10% acquired in 2002 by Capital Research & Management Co. Joined Sky Team alliance on 15/9/04 along KLM and Northwest. Held merger talks with United from 12/06 onward, called off on 27/4/08 officially due to UAL's poor financial status. Announced on 19/6/08 a general framework alliance with United (excluding merger) and join with Star Alliance (leaving SkyTeam, approved 7/4/09 by DoJ and 11/7/09 by DoT, effective 27/10/09). Merged with United in a $3.2b stock swap (announced 2/5/10, approved 27/8/10 by DoJ); transferred all operations to Continental's AOC (dba United Airlines) on 30/11/11.
