Purchased in 1938 by Eddie Rickenbacker, its former general manager. Took-over Colonial AL in 1956, Mackey AL in 1967,Caribair in 1973. Managed from 1975 (until 6/86) by Frank Borman, the former commander of Apollo VIII. Purchased South America routes from Braniff in 1982. Acquired by Texas Air Corp in 9/86 under pressure from Frank Lorenzo, but never merged with Continental AL. Took over People Express and New York Air in 2/87. Shuttle division sold to Donald Trump in 10/88 for $365m. Entered Chapter 11 on 9/3/89. Latin America's network sold to American Airlines in 12/89 for $471m. Trustee named by bankrupcy court in 4/90 to manage Eastern instead of Lorenzo. Ceased ops and entered Chapter 11 on 18/1/91 after heavy losses and much reduced staff and assets. Name and all trademarks sold on 26/10/07 to a Miami group headed by former airline executives.
